Why is canoeing on the Thouet so popular
The Thouet river is a tributary of the Loire, the confluence being just west of Saumur town centre. This part of the Thouet is very calm and tranquil – an ideal way to get close to nature. Whilst the fish are abundant, they are difficult to see, but if you keep your noise to a minimum there is a good chance you will see many of the 56 species of birds that have been spotted here – particularly herons, egrets and kingfishers! The activity appeals to couples, families and groups – most expressing a preference for canoeing here over the experience of canoeing in the more vast Loire.
The base of ThouetKayaks is 10 minutes by car from the centre of Saumur, or 30 minutes by bike. It is situated on two popular cycling routes, Le Thouet à vélo and La Vélo Francette and is also just a few minutes away from La Loire à Vélo. It is therefore very popular with cyclists who seek a few hours remaining active but out of the saddle!
If you are not going by bike, there is parking on site and public parking directly behind the launch point.
